Unionized Workers at China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Company (CNMC) Luanshya Copper Mine have been awarded K750 salary increment across the board.

This follows conclusion of negotiations between the Union and management at CNMC Luanshya Copper Mine for the 2021 Collective Agreement.

Both CNMC Luanshya Copper Mine Public Relations Manager Sydney Chileya and Mineworkers Union of Zambia President Joseph Chewe have confirmed the development.

Mr. Chileya said the two parties have been engaged in negotiations and agreed for K 750 across the board.

He said this is despite challenges the mining firm has been going through amid the corona virus pandemic the company has rewarded the employees with a salary hike.

And speaking during the signing ceremony, Mineworkers Union of Zambia President Joseph Chewe said the Union is happy it managed to sign the increment.

Mr. Chewe said the K 750 salary increment will cushion the impact of the high cost of living that has negatively affected workers in the country.

He said the increment will also break the perception that a Chinese owned mine can not award salary increments to its workers.

Mr. Chewe has also urged other mining companies to emulate CNMC Luanshya Copper Mine has done for its workers.

Public Service Management Division Permanent Secretary Boniface Chimbwali says the 8 percent salary increment that has been given to the education and health workers applies to all civil servants serving in Zambia except for the 2 percent, which only applies, to the health sector as an infectious allowance.

Mr. Chimbwali explained that government, through the bargaining unit, agreed on seven principles that will guide on the review of terms and conditions on civil servants in 2012.

He said based on the agreed principles, government has removed tax from civil servants with a salary below K4000 and has upped the salary of those who were earning K3300 by K700, which will be replicated, to all civil servants.

In an interview in Chembe district today, Mr. Chimbwali said government through the able leadership of President Edgar Lungu has considered the plight of civil servants in Zambia through the salary increment and other benefits for civil servants.

He further explained that government introduced benefits such as the health insurance policy, the funeral policy and affordable rates at lending institutions such as Microfinance.

Mr. Chimbwali also clarified on the issue of debt swap saying government will assist civil servants who have loans with money lending institutions and advance salaries by swapping their debt with the money the government owes them in terms of allowances or emoluments.

“If a civil servant owes a money lending institution for instance K100 and government owes a civil servant that amount, then government will pay the money lending institution that amount it owes the civil servant,” he explained.

He has also assured civil servants that all those people that were employed in 2012 without required positions for the positions they hold and were given a period to upgrade have since been automatically migrated into their positions.

“When government employed people in 2012 some had certificates while placed in positions for diploma holders and so on and I can inform the nation that the PMEC and Human Resource Development Department has confirmed all the civil servants on those positions,” he clarified.

Kitwe~Tue,1st December 2020

By Brightwell Chabusha

The Kitwe Subordinate Court has quashed the case of unlawful assembly which 21 Democratic Party-DP leaders were charged with.

The leaders were arrested by Riverside Police officers in Kitwe in January this year.

21 DP leaders led by their Party Spokesperson Judith Kabemba were arrested when they were found at a private house where they had gathered purporting to have been planing for a funeral.

Delivery judgement,Kitwe subordinate Court Magirstrate Belita Nkonde ruled that she had not found the 21 DP members with the case to answer given the facts of the matter and the law as contained in Section 72 of the Penal code under which they were charged for unlawful assembly.

She has explained that the arresting officer did not prove that the group met with an intent to commit a crime as it is a major ingredient in a case of unlawful assembly.

The Magistrate further explained she did not found them with the case to answer and therefore acquited them.

She went further to caution the police that they should not be rushing to arresting members of the public and Zambians for that matter without establishing prima facie cases and also without doing proper investigations of the matter.

And party spokesperson Judith Kabemba says she is happy that justice has prevailed.
