MAMA KANKASA’S REMAINS TO ARRIVE IN ZAMBIA ON THURSDAY- AMB. MWAMBA

The remains of veteran freedom Fighter Mama Chibesakunda Kankasa will arrive in Zambia on Thursday 1st November 2018.

Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa His Emmanuel Mwamba said the plane carrying the remains of the heroine struggle stalwart, will be South African Airways -SA064 that will land at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at 15;15 on Thursday 1st November 2018.

Mr. Mwamba announced this when he visited the family led by Dr. Tukiya Kankasa,  Dr. Chipepo Kankasa, Makole Kankasa who are gathered at a temporal funeral home in Pretoria.

The funeral is being held at Mrs. Mwila Chigaga’s home in Pretoria before being taken to Zambia on Thursday.

Mama Kankasa died in South Africa on Monday, 29th October 2018 aged 82 years of age.

Mr. Mwamba said Mama Kankasa was evacuated to South Africa on October 6th 2018 for specialist treatment by government.

She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Arwyp Medical Centre in Johannesburg  South Africa until her demise.

Mrs. Kankasa died on Monday 29th October 2018 at 10;30hrs.

Mama Kankasa was born ss Bessie Chibesakunda Ng’ona on 23rd March 1936, at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali districts

She was married to another struggle stalwart, Mr.Timothy Jiranda Kankasa who died on 28th October 1983.

Incidentally Mama Kankasa died a day after her husband’s anniversary.

She rose to position of the Chairperson of the UNIP Women’s League and was also a Member of the Central Committee(MCC).

She was also Minister of Women’s Affairs from 1969-1988 under the Kenneth Kaunda led government.

The Central Committee was the highest decision-making body at the time.

But it’s her earlier contributions to the struggle with renowned struggle heroine, Julia Mulenga Nsofwa Chikamoneka, Mama Betty Kaunda, Mama Emelia Saidi and Mama Mandalena Mumba, and others were the gallant made their mark.

Meanwhile, President Edgar Lungu has accorded freedom fighter Mama Chibesakunda Kankasa a state funeral.

President Lungu has declared Saturday November 3rd, the day she will be buried a day of national mourning.

Mama Kankasa’s burial will be preceded by a requiem service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka at 09:00 hours and later burial will take place at Leopards Hill Memorial Park.

During the period of national mourning all flags will fly at half-mast and programmes of entertainment on radio and television will be postponed or cancelled from 06 to 18 hours.
