UPND vice president in charge of administration Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has been arrested and detained at Woodlands Police Station on a charge of unlawful drilling.
Mwamba, popularly known as GBM, was accompanied to the police station by UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and vice president in charge of politics Dr Canisius Banda.
He arrived at Woodlands Police Station at 09:35 hours and was interrogated for over an hour before being ushered into cells at 10:48 hours.
His eight member legal team failed in their attempts to secure police bond for their client with their best bet being him being taken to court early.
Hundreds of cadres and sympathizers turned up Woodlands police to render their solidarity.
On Saturday police arrested 21 youths at Mwamba’s Luanshya road property carrying along with them some alleged offensive weapons.
Speaking shortly after escorting his Vice-President for Administration to the holding cells, Hichilema described the action as suppression of human rights.
Police needed teargas to disperse UPND cadres who had escorted Hichilema and GBM’s entourage.
Hichilema has appealed to all UPND members and sympathisers to remain calm as the UPND is a peaceful party.
He accused police of throw teargas canisters when he was still conferring with his lawyers outside the police station on how quickly to obtain a police bond for GBM.
Hichilema said he could hardly speak after inhaling teargas smoke and described the situation as unfortunate. He accused police of teargassing school children who were walking home.
