Former MMD deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu says embattled MMD leader Nevers Mumba is hallucinating about a purported meeting at which he claims to have made peace with fifth Repblican president Rupiah Banda.
In an exclusive interview with Zambia Reports, Nyangu says no reconciliation between the two parties has taken place and any such information is total fabrication aimed at advancing a self agenda.
Dr Mumba was quoted by ZNBC News last night claiming he had reconciled former president Rupiah Banda.
Mumba, who is pushing for an alliance with the ruling Patriotic Front, has struggled to hold the former ruling party together since taking over after the 2011 elections said the reconciliation had nothing to do with the imminent alliance.
“They have not met. There’s no reconciliation of any nature. Dr Mumba is just hallucination. I should have been party to that negotiation because I am an interested party,” he said.
Nyangu has since challenged Dr Mumba to prove he had reconciled with President Banda.
“Let Dr Mumba prove that reconciliation. I challenge him to prove it. If there was such a reconciliation, a lot of us would have known. What he is is far from the truth,” he said.
“In fact, President Banda would have informed me. The best thing for Dr Mumba is to be truthful with your colleagues so that they know what you are doing.”
Last night, Dr Mumba – a former clergy who should know that one of the 10 commandments is; “…you shall not bear false testimony” – claimed he had patched up his differences with Banda to enhance party unity.
The duo’s relationship soured following a rift on who should have contested the January 20 presidential elections leading to Banda backing the ruling PF while Dr Mumba learnt the hard way marshalling only 15, 000 votes and emerged third behind Edith Nawakwi’s FDD.
“I would like to confirm that we have reconciled with President Banda for the sake of party unity. The reconciliation has nothing to do with the alliance because we had been talking long before the alliance talks began,” Mumba said.
“We have reconciled not because of alliance talks but because it is the right thing to do.” The MMD and the PF have opened talks for a possible alliance ahead of the August 11 general elections but party members are demanding their leader calls a convention at which new office bearers will be elected.
