Zambia’s Sydney Siame yesterday raced with Jamaican sprint magnet Usain Bolt in the preliminary 200 metres heat at the World Championship being held at Beijing’s Bird Nest finishing 80 seconds behind the globe’s leading runner.
The Chingola product finished at 21.08 in the heat that Bolt won after reaching the touchline on 20.28.
Siame was delighted to share the stage with the world’s best runner.
Formerly of Kabundi Secondary School, Siame did not hide his delight; “Am very happy that I managed to qualify to the world championships, secondly have gained experience and it’s a great achievement for me to run with Bolt.”
Bolt is a nine-time world champion and cruised into the semi-finals of the 200m race. He won the gold medal in the 100 metres beating American Justin Gatlin.
Siame is a member of Nchanga Athletics Club in Chingola. He is proud of himself because he was still at Secondary School in 2012 and now he can compete with the world’s greatest.
“I started athletics in 2012 when I was in school at Kabundi Secondary School ,it takes more than 4 years to train to be at peak in athletics, so am very happy because have just been in athletics for 3 years and I have won more that 7 medals,” he says.
In 2014, Siame won gold medal at the Nanjing Olympic Youth Games.
