Debate On Privatisation Isn’t A PF Baby – Sunday Chanda

The Patriotic Front (PF) has said the current debate on privatization of national assets which took place in the MMD era is not the party’s issue.

Speaking on 5FM’s “Burning Issue” programme today, PF Media Director Sunday Chanda said the ruling party did not start the debate, as it was initiated by former Finance Minister Edith Nawakwi and PeP leader Sean Tembo.

“Let me make it very clear here, and I will make a disclaimer. For starters, the privatization debate is not a PF baby. The privatization debate is a matter between comrade Hakainde Hichilema and comrade Edith Nawakwi and comrade Sean Tembo, among others. So it’s a debate between stakeholders and citizens. We (PF) have nothing to do with it,” he said when responding to a question from radio programme host Zachariah Banda.

“We have absolutely nothing to do with it! That’s the more reason why even on this platform, unless you insist, it’s not a matter I would want to go into details because it’s not our baby, it’s not our issue.”

Meanwhile, Mr Chanda refuted allegations that the ruling party was trying to divert attention from other important matters, saying the party remains focused on its agenda to develop Zambia.

He further refuted allegations by UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema that government was trying to get him killed using the privatization issue.

And Mr Chanda said the party was engaging in issue based campaigns in Lukashya and Mwansabombwe constituencies, saying it was busy preaching its manifesto to the electorate and that it would not engage in any acts of political violence during campaigns.

Mr Chanda stressed that PF would not shield any member who engages in criminal activities now and beyond.

I’m More Tonga Than HH – Muutale

I’m more Tonga than Hakainde Hichilema, PF national mobilization committee member Bizwell Muutale has said.

Speaking in Livingstone, Southern Province, where he met PF party officials, Muutale said there’s somebody who thinks he is more Tonga than anybody else and he is a messiah of the Tongas.

“Today I refuse – the gloves are out. We will not be deprived. We are here in Southern Province and I’m not leaving. If Hakainde thinks Southern Province belongs to him, I’m more Tonga than he is. Ndi mwana a chief Monze mebo (I’m a child of chief Monze). What he (Hichilema) can do, I can do it 10 times than he does it. If he can come and tell us he is going to do the borehole, I’m gonna do the borehole now. We have the President; he comes here in Southern Province…You saw what happened in Monze? What an embarrassment
And the so-called MPs, the comments they were passing… They were voted [for] by some of you to be in Parliament. 25 years…They gonna go 30 years, what will change? No change will come out of Southern Province and I’m assuring you now. We can bet,” Mr Muutale said.

Muutale said change was coming to Southern Province.

“Change is coming to Southern Province [because] His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is looking into Southern. Nothing will remain the same. We are here now; he (Lungu) has sent us to move as one nation and re-build our country. Kweendelenya ambubaamba ba chairman (like the chairman [Lawrence Evans] has said, UNIP was here, I had free education in UNIP. MMD came; we drank coffee for the first time in Zambia, PF came, he says eat your pie. We have seen the toll gates in South Africa [and] we pay. But okuno (here) we are refusing. The President has brought development – look at the roads. We are hitting 200 [kilometres per hour],” he said.

And Mr Muutale said they were sent by President Edgar Lungu to work in Southern Province.

“We’ve been sent by His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to work here in Southern Province. The people in Southern Province say ‘PF has neglected us.’ The PF government is saying the people of Southern Province have rejected us. We have had so many discussions but you would understand. It’s like the chief expressed that it’s like there is a snake and a person. The snake is scared of biting a person and the person is scared of killing snake. Who is wrong? But we are now going to change this. Most of all, we are not going to be a tribe [but] we are going to be Zambians. One Zambia, One Nation. When you cross Kafue coming here (in Southern Province,) everything is wrong. I’m going to speak openly and blunt, because so many lies have caused the way we are today in Southern Province,” he said.

Mr Muutale said Southern Province is in Zambia.

“There is no Tonga who is another province, a Bemba in another province that is called another country. We have one President whom we look up to. Bakwimikizya bakapokola abukali maningi (when you are flagged down by traffic officers, you even fume), because the roads are nice. Wasika biyo (the moment you reach) mbozwiida mu Monze kuya ku Mazabuka ma tyre ayide kudubuka (the moment you leave Monze driving towards Mazabuka, your car tyres start bursting). It’s Propaganda – Kampyongo

Home affairs minister Stephen Kampyongo has rubbished stories and pictures circulating on social media that children are being given national registration cards (NRCs).

For one to get an NRC, they must be 16 years and above.

The social media claims are that NRCs are being given to children as young as 12 and 14 in the current mobile registration exercise.

But Mr Kampyongo has trashed the claims and categorically stated that they were purely propaganda as no government official could be that reckless to issue NRCs to children.

Nawakwi Is Blessing, God Is Using Her To Expose HH’s Character – Mumbi Phiri

Hichilema is a wrong man to aspire for Presidency because of the manner he allegedly mishandled the transaction role that was placed on him by the Government during the sale of Sun International Hotel in Livingstone and other national assets like RAMCOZ in Luanshya, PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri has said.

She said when she featured on Kasama Radio that God was using FDD leader Edith Nawakwi, whom she described as a blessing, to expose Hichilema’s real character to open up the eyes of Zambians ahead of the 2021 general elections.

Nawakwi has challenged Hichilema to explain how he accumulated his wealth, saying he fraudulently benefited from the privatization process that happened in the MMD era, an allegation which the opposition UPND leader has repeatedly refuted.

Mr Hichilema has since sued Ms Nawakwi for libel.

But Mrs Phiri on Tuesday said Mr Hichilema, who turned out to be one of the shareholders of Sun Hotel after the conclusion of the sale, should have declared interest in the matter in accordance with the principles of good corporate governance as opposed to what he did.

She called on Mr Hichilema to give a comprehensive explanation to the public on the role he played during the sale of RAMCOZ and why he never declared interest during the sale of Sun Hotel instead of rushing to court to sue Ms Nawakwi for defamation of character before clearing his name over the Issues at hand “which begs honest answers.”

She said there was nothing political for Zambians to demand answers from Mr Hichilema, who is aspiring to lead Zambia, on matters of national interest.

Mrs Phiri wondered why the Hichilema “always gets emotional” whenever he is asked about the source of his wealth by the media.

Cement Price Hike Due To Quoting Of Raw Materials In Dollars, Reveals Dangote

Dangote Cement Chief Financial Officer Mr Bright Tembo has revealed the hike in cement prices is because suppliers of raw materials, especially gypsum, are quoting prices in dollars.

He said this when Copperbelt Province Minister, Japhen Mwakalombe, visited the plant.

Mr Tembo said the situation has necessitated the increase in cement price in the country, a situation that was beyond cement manufacturers.

And Mr Mwakalombe has warned that such suppliers will be visited by the law and that necessary action will be taken.

He said government is concerned with the continued increase of prices of cement on the market.

However, Mr Tembo, in response, said the closure of Chambishi Metals has deprived cement manufacturers a reasonably priced source of gypsum which is now being sourced from South Africa and Namibia, among other distant sources who were quoting the products in dollars.

He said efforts to open Chambishi metals must be expedited so that the challenges being faced by the cement manufacturing companies can be mitigated.

2021 adoptions will be based on grassroots recommendation – PF

Eastern Province PF chairperson Andrew Lubusha has told PF members in Chadiza District not to be swayed by aspiring candidates because adoptions for 2021 elections will be based on the recommendation by the grassroot.

Mr Lubusha urged both incumbent MPs and aspiring candidates to concentrate on sensitising people in the communities to register as voters.

He said this in a Facebook posting after his committee visited Chadiza District yesterday.

“Today, we were in Chadiza to meet Party officials and share notes with them. They raised a number of pertinent issues which we have taken note of. Morever, we encouraged the Party officials to go flat out in sensitising and mobilising members of the community to get their National Registration Cards and register as voters so that they participate in the coming general elections,” Mr Lubusha stated.

“We encouraged the District, Constituency and ward party committees to be visiting Branches and Sections as well as traditional leadership and the Church respectively.
We reminded each other not to get swayed by aspiring candidates because 2021 adoption will be based on who the grassroots will recommend. We urged them to allow both the incumbent and aspiring candidates to prove their power by sensitizing communities to register as voters.”

He said the party’s goal is to make sure that they deliver votes for President Edgar Lungu in 2021.

“We advised them to resist the urge of supporting individuals while betraying the bigger picture of the Party. We took cognizant of their emphasis to have the Chipata-Chadiza road tarred. We acknowledged the delay to construct the road but we assured them that government is working round the clock to have the road built to bituminous standard only that there are financial challenges hence the decision to first do an all weather gravel then later upgrade it to bituminous as soon as funds are available,” Mr Lubusha stated.

“Regarding the mobility of Party officials during Party mobilisation, we assured our Party members to be calm because the Party has already secured adequate mobility in readiness for 2021 elections. We unanimously agreed to support the candidature of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in the forth coming Party convention and support anyone who will be adopted as his running mate. We encouraged all Party officials to admonish anyone who will bring division in the Party.”

Over 70 fuel tankers owned by Zambians are stuck in Mozambique after their vehicles were deemed too old to carry crude oil from that country to Zambia.

Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers and Allied Workers General Secretary Humphrey Kapesha has confirmed and has since called on Government to intervene in the matter.

“Yes, I can confirm that our Tanker drivers are stranded in that country. The reason is that the vehicles they have are deemed to be too old. Since this is an issue that involves another country, we ask the Zambian government to intervene,” said Mr Kapesha.

He further urged the ministry of labour to channel its energy to finding solutions to problems facing tanker drivers as opposed to issuing threats of diregistering unions that are speaking for the plight of troubled workers.

And Union president Bob Ndalama has wondered why only foreign owned tankers are allowed to offload directly to end users as opposed to them offloading their oil at set up depots.

Climate Change, Global Health Pandemics, Will Put Economies On Their Knees, Warns WWF

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Zambia has called on world leaders to halt the rapid decline of nature to save millions of people and economies from multiple crises.

WWF was deeply concerned at the continued rapid decline in nature globally, with potential to push into complete extinction over a million plant and animal species.

According to a statement issued following the launch of this year’s Living Planet Report (LPR), WWF Country Director Nachilala Nkombo said the continued rapid decline in nature was becoming a big threat to societal and environmental stability of the planet.

Ms Nkombo said that the impact of climate crisis, nature loss and global health pandemics could lead many vulnerable communities and national economies to their knees.

She said LPR indicated that the environmental destruction through increasing and rapid deforestation, unsustainable agriculture and illegal wildlife trade are key drivers of the continued decline to nature being practiced in various communities and nations

“World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Zambia is pleased to join the global WWF network in launching the 2020 Living Planet Report (LPR). The LPR is a comprehensive WWF flagship study of the ‘state of the planet’s global biodiversity and health produced by 134 authors from 25 countries around the world every 2 years. In LPR 2020, WWF remains deeply concerned at the continued rapid decline in nature globally, with potential to push into complete extinction over a million plant and animal species. This situation is becoming a big threat to societal and environmental stability of our planet. Our launch of the Living Planet Report today places environmental destruction at the center of the world’s most challenging crises – the climate crisis, nature loss and global health pandemics,” Ms Nkombo said. “The combined impacts of these crises could lead many vulnerable communities and national economies to their knees. WWF believes that the rapid decline of nature can be halted by ending the destruction of natural habitats and reforming our food systems. The LPR has indicated that the environmental destruction through increasing and rapid deforestation, unsustainable agriculture and illegal wildlife trade are key drivers of the continued decline to nature being practiced in various communities and nations,” she said.
Nkombo disclosed that according to WWF’s Living Planet Report 2020, there was two thirds decline of the global wildlife population on average since 1970, less than half a century due in large part to the habitat destruction.”

We’re Not Borrowing For Show, We’re Borrowing For Production – PF

The ruling Patriotic Front has blamed the continued depreciation of the kwacha on negative speculations following Central Bank changes, importation of crude oil and debt servicing, among other factors.

And the PF has said government is borrowing for production and not consumption.

Speaking on Muvi TV’s “Blunt Talk” programme which also featured with UPND’s Mubita Nawa, PF media director Sunday Chanda said the low reserves could also be attributed to servicing of debts which are in United States dollars.

“When we talk about depreciation of kwacha, we must understand that Zambia does not exist as an island, Zambia belongs to the global village. The recent depreciation of the Kwacha could be attributed to importation of crude oil and restocking of Indeni. Investors could also be waiting on the fence after changes at central bank. Investors could be waiting for policy direction. Negative speculation on central bank changes could also have contributed to the depreciation of the Kwacha. The low reserves could also be attributed to servicing of debts which are in dollars,” Mr Chanda explained.

He said the appetite for copper has dwindled due to COVID-19, adding that Global economies are still miles away from returning to pre-pandemic levels, with only China close to getting there.

But Mr Nawa, who is also a renowned Zambian motivational speaker, argued that by the time BoZ governor Denny Kalyalya was being fired, the country’s economy was already in a negative state.

He said economies must be managed in a prudent way possible.

“The economy of Zambia is in shambles due to lack of leadership skills by the current government. Zambia has also over borrowed. The problem with Zambia’s economy is that it is heavy on debt,” Mr Nawa said.

However, Mr Chanda said the government has borrowed for production.

“PF has borrowed for production. PF has not borrowed for show; PF has borrowed for consumption. The Patriotic Front is like that responsible father, building a house for the family. Investments in infrastructure that we’ve borrowed for is a precursor for development,” he said.

He further said the impact on the global economy due to the pandemic this year could be estimated to be in the cost of $1 trillion and Zambia has equally not been spared.

“Pre-COVID, we were coming from devastating effects of climate change. After that, we walked into COVID-19. The impact on the global economy due to COVID-19 in 2020 is estimated to be in the cost of $1 trillion,” Mr Chanda said.

2 Men Nabbed For Impersonating Council Officials

Lusaka City Council has apprehended two men of Kuku and Jack Compounds for impersonating Council officials.

LCC public relations manager George Sichimba stated that the two men aged 37 and 38 years were apprehended on Wednesday at Bob’s Corner in Kamwala South following a tip off by an alert member of the public.

Mr Sichimba stated that the two men, whose real names have been withheld, were cornered as they were going round inspecting shops for business levies, health permits and fire certificates.

He stated that the suspects were asking for instant payments from shop owners who were allegedly found with no proper documents which led to members of the public to be suspicious and alerted Council police.

“Council police officers found them with fake LCC identity cards, business permits, health permits and fire certificates. The false names on the identity cards are Chief Inspector Cletus Mwamba and Licensing Officer Alex Kangwa. The duo has been handed over to Civic Centre Police Post where a docket has been opened against them,” Mr Sichimba stated.

He stated that in November last year, LCC unearthed a scam in which some unscrupulous people were masquerading as LCC Public Health Inspectors and were extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public.

Mr Sichimba stated that the group was conducting illegal inspections in business houses and private schools where they were penalising owners on flimsy grounds such as operating under unsanitary conditions.

He stated that the self-imposed Public Health Inspectors were demanding cash payments or transfer of money to their mobile money accounts.

“They were demanding for penalties ranging from K1,500 to as much as K5,000. They were threatening to close business premises if penalties were not paid instantly. It is suspected that the two men apprehended yesterday could be part of the notorious group which has been extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public, ” Mr Sichimba stated.

He stated that members of the public should note that LCC has migrated from cash payments in the field as all clients are advised to make payments through the banks and other official platforms.

“It should also be noted that LCC workers carry with them authentic identity cards and wear other forms of identity such as branded reflective vests and move in LCC branded vehicles. Members of the public are at liberty to demand for proper identification from people they are dealing with,” Mr Sichimba stated.

He advised members of the public to report any suspicious characters to LCC or state police, especially if they fail to properly identify themselves.

Mr Sichimba disclosed that LCC does not have agents who collect money on its behalf and as such, it will not be held responsible for payments made to unauthorised persons or entities.

It’s Unethical For UPND To Inspect Local Govt Projects, Says Kalumbila Council

The Kalumbila Town Council has described as unethical the inspection of local government projects by the opposition UPND in North Western Province.

Council Secretary Josephine Mwanza said the inspection of projects by the UPND had no blessings of the Council.

“We wish to distance ourselves from the press statement being circulated by UPND media team of an inspection done on a number of projects such as schools, health facilities and bridges in Kalumbila District,” she stated.

Ms Mwanza has stated that all projects being undertaken by the Local Authority are Government projects and can in no way be attributed to an individual.

She said the inspection conducted had no blessings of the Council and Management, adding that the Local Authority regards the act as unprofessional and unethical.

Ms Mwanza added that Government is working hard to ensure quality service delivery and infrastructure development in Kalumbila District through the Local Authority.

But the Opposition Political party has insisted that it was in order because the local government is controlled by the UPND in the province.

UPND Provincial vice chairlady Naomi Tetamashimba said the party leadership was in order to inspect projects funded using locally generated funds because they are UPND initiatives.

She said project inspections by the UPND leadership is to familiarize themselves with the happenings in the districts controlled by the UPND.

“The Patriotic Front should accept the fact that Local Government in North Western Province is controlled by UPND and must appreciate the party for providing leadership and ensuring that the people receive the much needed development using locally generated funds,” Ms Tetamashimba added.

Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has urged electorates in Mwansabombwe to vote for a PF candidate in the forthcoming parliamentary by-election as a way of honouring their late Member of Parliament Rodgers Mwewa.

Speaking at a rally in Kazembe area at Lubansa Primary School ground, Mr Chilangwa said the late Member of Parliament had initiated a lot of projects that would only be completed by a PF candidate.

He stated that voting for the opposition will make it difficult to complete projects started by the late parliamentarian.

Mr Chilangwa added that opposition MPs have a tendency of not wanting to work with government.

He said the replacement of a Member of Parliament in Mwansabombwe does not concern the UPND or any other political party.

Meanwhile, campaign manager Yamfwa Mukanga said only a PF candidate will have the capacity to deliver in the Constituency.

He said the opposition have nothing to offer and should not be entertained in the Constituency.

Kabaso Kampapi is the Patriotic Front’s candidate for the replace Rodgers Mwewa who died.

President Edgar has said Zambia is today better than the PF found it, saying the ruling party had promised Zambians a better country.

And President Lungu has advised Zambians to spend their time productively rather than wasting it spewing out vitriol on social media.

Delivering his State of the Nation address in Parliament this morning, President Lungu said the PF government is determined to turn around the country’s economy for the benefit of all Zambians.

The Head of State said he will turn around the economy through dedication, resilience and innovation of the government, in partnership with the citizens, as the economy can only be built through hard work and prudent use of the country’s resources.

“We must get up each day to do something productive for a better tomorrow. Something to improve our ourselves, our families, and our communities. Let us spend our time productively rather than wasting precious time spewing out vitriol on social media.
Let me thank our people for the continued faith and belief in my administration. Your continued support is what has given us the impetus to soldier on, despite the many challenges we have faced. Let us continue to put our country first in all we do. There is only one Zambia, the Zambia that belongs to all of us, the Zambia we should be proud of. And the Zambia we want. Let me also thank our cooperating partners who have continued to believe in us, and our development agenda. On behalf of the nation, I want to assure our cooperating partners that they have our gratitude,” President Lungu said.

Chitimukulu Condemns Introduction Of Sexuality Education Programmes In Primary Schools

Chitimukulu, the paramount Chief of the Bemba speaking people in Northern province, has condemned the introduction of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) programme in early grades of primary schools.

Speaking when he held talks with Religious Affairs minister Godfridah Sumaili at his palace in Mungwi, the traditional leader complained that Comprehensive Sexuality Education programme in schools is one factor defeating the fight against early pregnancies.

The Government has rolled out the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) across the country.

But the programme has been condemned in several places around the world for its graphic nature and for teaching content deemed too pornographic for children.

CSE is also criticized for exposing children to an inappropriate sexual debate which is against traditions and culture.

The programme is said to also encourage acceptance of different sexual orientations (gay sex and gay relationships).

In 2019, Zambia completed a pilot study and has began rolling out CSE in schools across the country, with support from United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The African Union has, however, not adopted CSE and has said CSE cannot be a proposed solution to challenges related to early childhood, sexual abuse in marriages, and gender based violence.
