Two sisters in Ndola have been taken to court for allegedly indecently assaulting another women they suspected of going out with a married man by inserting an iron bar into her private parts.

This comes a year after two women of Ndola were sentenced to 18 years imprisonment each for savagely inserting a bottle in another woman’s private parts on suspicion that she was flirting with the husband of one of them.

Before sending the two women to jail, High Court judge Emelia Sunkutu described the convicts’ action as “unprecedented cruelty and an act of sheer wickedness” which she found difficult to comprehend.

Delphister Malasa, 26, a house wife, and Sarah Malasa, 20, a Grade 12 pupil, both of Kabushi Township, have been arrested and charged with indecent assault on a female.

It is alleged that while acting together, the duo wilfully and unlawfully indecently assaulted a fellow woman.

The incident took place on Tuesday last week when Delphister discovered that her husband was allegedly having an affair with the victim, who is believed to be her ‘best friend’.

The court heard that upon discovering the truth, Delphister in the company of her younger sister, Sarah went to the victim’s house, accosted and started beating her.

Delphietr and Sarah allegedly undressed the victim, removed her underwear and inserted an iron bar in her private parts.

When the matter came up in court the duo pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Changa Chitabo granted the duo K100, 000 bail in their own recognisance, implying that they will be required to pay the amount should they skip bail.

This was after they applied for bail.

Meanwhile magistrate Chitabo has ordered the State to take Sarah for an age determination exercise.

This was after he rejected the age of 20 which appeared on the indictment.

The matter has been adjourned to July 1, 2020 for commencement of trial.

Game Scout Gets 30 Years For Murder

The Chipata High Court has sentenced a Lundazi village game scout to 30 years imprisonment with hard labour for murder.

Lusaka judge Dr Winnie Sithole Mwenda, who was sitting in Chipata, jailed Aaron Chisani Zimba from Chasato wildlife camp for shooting Lucy Mumba in March 2018.

Zimba, who was jointly charged with Leonard John Ng’uni, shot the deceased at Khupe village when they went to apprehend a suspect.

On the material day, the neighbourhood watch group had apprehended Jairos Kasalu of Khupe village and took him to their offices but the villagers mobilized themselves and withdrew the suspect while in handcuffs from the neighbourhood offices.

Village scouts that were working with neighbourhood watch members went to control the situation but in the process, a senior member of the village scouts was hit with a stick by the villagers.

Village scouts and neighbourhood watch members then mobilized themselves and raided Khupe village to arrest Kasalu who was withdrawn from the custody of the neighbourhood group with handcuffs.

Upon seeing village scouts and neigbourhood watch members, villagers scampered in different directions but the deceased with other people went to hide in one of the houses.

The convict went to that house and shot the deceased and her mother.

Mumba died on the spot but her mother, Anne Makamu, sustained severe injuries.

But in his defence, Zimba told the court that when he opened the door to the house where the deceased and other people were, the gun which he was carrying discharged itself and shot the deceased.

Judge Mwenda acquitted the second accused person.

In mitigation, defence counsel John Phiri from JM Associates stated that circumstances of the case indicate that there was some kind of provocation from the villagers which necessitated the convict and his colleagues to go to Khupe village.

Phiri said the convict was also struck by one of the villagers from the crowd and appealed to the court to take that as evidence of failed defence thereby constituting extenuating circumstances.

He asked the court to give the convict a custodial sentence and not the mandatory death sentence.

On the second count which was reduced from attempted murder to failure to secure a gun, counsel Phiri said the convict was remorseful.

In her judgment, judge Mwenda said the convict’s assertion that the gun discharged itself was an afterthought and dismissed it.

She said Zimba, who was trained on how to handle a gun, should have secured it well.

Judge Mwenda said Zimba would serve 30 years for murder and fined him K3, 500 for failure to secure his gun.

It is good that almost all traditional leaders agree that the Constitution Amendment Bill Number 10 of 2019 will help to resolve the succession wrangles in chiefdoms, President Edgar Lungu has said.

The Head of State said when he met traditional leaders in Senga Hill District on Friday that the current situation made it hard for Chiefdoms to avoid succession wrangles.

The President said with the proposal in Bill 10, there was hope that the succession wrangles will be addressed.

He said as things are currently, anyone could stand and claim to be a Chief without fear of any authority.

The President further asked traditional leaders to work with government in taking development to their people.

Lungu Takes a Dig at Hichilema Over Development

President Edgar Lungu says it is disgusting and immoral for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to suggest that government should take development only to places that voted for the PF in the last general elections.

Mr Hichilema told a radio station in Chama district that the Head of State was wasting too much time in North Western, Western and Southern provinces and spending money on projects in areas that did not vote for him (President Lungu).

These remarks have shocked President Lungu who said he expected Mr Hichilema to appreciate the spirit of One Zamhia, One Nation as he would take development anywhere in the country regardless of the people’s voting pattern.

“Yesterday, when flagging off the works on the Luwingu – Nsombo – Chaba – Chilubi road, I expressed disappointment with remarks by UPND leader, Mr Hakainde Hichilema that I was taking development to the regions where the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) did not get votes at the expense of those that voted us. Mr Hichilema issued a statement on radio in Chama district that I am wasting too much time in North Western, Western and Southern Province spending money and doing projects at the expense of the people who voted for me and therefore, they should vote for him and he will finish the projects,” President Lungu said.

“It was disgusting and immoral for him to issue such an irresponsible statement. I do not think a person worth his mind should talk like that. I expected him to appreciate that we are One Zambia, One Nation.”

He said it was the desire of his government to see that the whole nation is developed.

“It is my government’s desire to see the whole nation develop because all the people in the regions were Zambians. But for him to tell people in areas where we got our votes to say you are wasting time having voted for Lungu because he will not finish the Chinsali – Chama road, that was indecent and immoral. It is cheap.”

He said Mr Hichilema would have been the first one to complain if the government just concentrated on taking development only to the PF strongholds.

“I should reechoe that we remain determined to develop all parts of our nation without leaving anyone behind,” President Lungu said.

MoH Tips Parents on Fathers’ Day

The Ministry of Health has encouraged fathers, mothers and other caregivers to be interacting with their children to enable them to develop in a healthy way.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson Abel Kabalo has said Children who receive nurturing care and the stimulation of play, including interactions with parents and caregivers, develop quicker and grow healthier.

Dr. Kabalo said this in the spirit of Father’s Day, where the Ministry of Health in partnership with Ministry of General Education and Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, with support from UNICEF and the LEGO Foundation, is launching a national campaign entitled: “I play, I learn, I thrive”.

He said the campaign is intended to spread awareness about the importance of play for young children.

“The Significance of Play in a Child’s Development During the first few years of life, a child’s brain develops at a rate of more than one million new neural connections every second. This is a once in a lifetime occurrence. Children who receive nurturing care and the stimulation of play, including interactions with parents and caregivers, develop quicker and grow healthier, in addition to thriving better in school and later in life,” Dr Kabalo explained.

“For children to feel secure, they must be shown love and affection. Even babies that are too young to understand what adults say to them in words, can understand love and rejection, joy and sorrow in the parent or caregiver’s tone of voice, body language, actions and gestures. Parents and caregivers can express love and affection to the child in different ways; hugging, cuddling, smiling and laughing together, tickling, massaging, gestures, and vocalisation.”

He noted that during the period of Covid19, children are spending more time at home.

“During this period of the COVID-19 pandemic, children are spending more time at home…thus encourage fathers, mothers and other caregivers to be interacting with their children to enable them to develop in a healthy way. Development of Children in the context of Zambian Proverbs The Playful Parenting campaign, launched today in Zambia, will highlight local proverbs that encourage nurturing care towards children.”

“The early years offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to shape a child’s ability to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to society. Parents, including fathers, guardians and other caregivers are the main providers of the nutrition, stimulation, love and protection that every baby needs to build the brain’s architecture. Young children need acknowledgement and encouragement to develop confidence in themselves. Children should be encouraged when they achieve a new goal or are trying out something new. Praise motivates them to explore more and exploration is in turn good for brain development. Fathers and mothers need to be aware that they can negatively influence or lower children’s motivation to explore if the child’s efforts are not recognised,” said Dr. Kabalo.

He said Children’s confidence is built when their parents respond positively to their actions.

“Children’s confidence is built when their parents and caregivers respond positively to their actions. They perform significantly better when they are praised and given gentle feedback and explanations about what was good about their actions and why such a deed was commendable. Praise that is specific and acknowledges the processes of completing an activity or solving a problem helps develop children’s learning and motivation,” he said.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has demanded that the whereabouts of photographer Chellah Tukuta who was arrested last week on four counts of criminal libel be known.

Mr Hichilema said this after he made an attempt to see Tukuta at Lusaka Central Police station but police allegedly told him that they did not know the whereabouts of the accused person.

“The PF cannot continue stepping their knees on both country’s economy and our fundamental human rights,” Mr Hichilema stated.

Tukuta was arrested on four charges of criminal libel after he made criminal accusations against information minister Dora Siliya, Zambia Revenue Authority Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda and former State House spokesperson Amos Chanda.

“This morning, we went to Lusaka Central police to visit the arrested youth, Chellah Tukuta. Unfortunately, the Police stopped us from seeing him, stating that they are unaware of his whereabouts. We have demanded that his whereabouts be made public as he is not a criminal. The PF cannot continue stepping their knees on both country’s economy and our fundamental human rights,”
Mr Hichilema stated.

He has demanded for the immediate release of Tukuta.

“We stand by every youth out there speaking out including government workers who cannot voice out for fear of being fired. And we demand that Chellah Tukuta be released immediately. It’s time for all of us to get involved and get it solved. When we take over government next year, courtesy of our people’s votes and through God’s will, citizens will be allowed to speak freely because that is their right. To this effect, we say: Bally will fix it,” Mr Hichilema said.

Chief government spokesperson Dora Siliya says President Edgar Lungu is not afraid of criticism or debate from anyone but warned that this should be palatable and for the benefit of the entire country.

Ms Siliya, the information minister who was speaking at a joint media briefing with livestock minister Professor Nkandu Luo at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services office in Lusaka today, warned that the government would not tolerate any insults on the Head of State in the name of citizens’ freedom of expression.

She advised Zambians to begin to question young people who use social media to insult the Head of State instead of doing meaningful things.

And Ms Siliya said government is also worried with the rise in bullying of women on social media.

She said in as much as everyone has a right to engage on internet, such right to express themselves needs to come with responsibility.

Ms Siliya said although freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Republican Constitution, it is also guided by other laws such as Defamation which people should be aware of.

She said the right to freedom of expression extends to the media who are, however, expected to public factual information that is within the laws.

LUSAKA, ZAMBIAZambian Breweries together with Lafarge Zambia have donated medical supplies worth K100,000 to Tubalange Mini-Hospital in Chilanga from funds raised from the Mosi Vibes At Home online party, which the two organisations partnered on.

The donation is part of the ties cemented between Zambia’s largest brewing company and the country’s largest cement producer aimed at fighting COVID-19 at community level to safeguard a healthy nation.

“We are delighted that coming together with Lafarge Zambia to fight COVID-19 is already brewing success, and we are indeed not just building better cities, but making a better world for all,” said Zambian Breweries country director Jose Moran, speaking on Monday (June 22,) when he handed over the medical supplies to the Chilanga-based COVID-19 quarantine centre.

He emphasised that the donated items would go a long way in quickening the hospital’s response to the pandemic.

“We believe these supplies will enhance the hospital’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The items will also assure safety of both medical staff and patients,” he said.

Mr Moran underscored the value the two companies attached to health workers as frontliners in the fight against COVID-19, saying: “We value and salute you, our health workers, for your unwavering fight against this disease. We couldn’t fight this battle alone without your care, love, and above all, your expertise,” the ZB country director noted.

Lafarge Chief Executive Officer Jimmy Khan said health and safety is Lafarge’s core value, thus the health and safety of our communities was of great importance to the company.

“Lafarge Zambia will continue to be innovative and create partnerships with other major players in the economy, to raise funds to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.” said Lafarge Zambia Chief Executive Officer Mr Jimmy Khan, speaking on Monday when he handed over the medical supplies to the Chilanga based COVID-19 quarantine centre Tubalange Mini-Hospital.

Mr Khan also highlighted that Lafarge Zambia’s focus as a business was to not only provide quality-building materials for better cities, but it was also to support the government’s efforts in these uncertain times. “Our partnership with Zambian Breweries has shown that if major economic players in the country work together, they too can support our communities in different ways.” the Lafarge Zambia Chief Executive Officer said.

And, Chilanga District Commissioner Richard Ndazye hailed the two captains of industry for their gesture, saying: “I must say I am impressed with the commitment that Lafarge Zambia and Zambian Breweries have exhibited in the fight against COVID-19 in our community.

“This is my first public appearance after my appointment as District Commissioner Chilanga.  I am happy because my first assignment has to do with the good of the community, in association with two great companies Lafarge Zambia and Zambian Breweries who continues to create a great impact in the community through sharing best practices  on COVID-19 not only with employees, but more so, with the many stakeholders that the companies interfaces with.”

Zambian Breweries and Lafarge generated the K100,000 donated to Tubalange Mini-Hospital through a joint initiative dubbed Mosi Vibes At Home Online Music Experience.

The online party, which was held on May 23, 2020, was aimed at raising funds for frontline health workers in the war against COVID-19, based on the number of views from the live stream on Facebook

Over 50,000 citizens viewed the charitable party as they stayed home safe and enjoyed responsibly while indoors.

Recently, the beer and cement giants donated K100,000 to the University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Engineering to help develop the nation’s first prototype ventilator.
