Onus is On MMD – Chituwo

Chituwoimage.phpOpposition Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) vice-president Brian Chituwo says the onus is on the former ruling party to give hope and stop members from leaving the former ruling party.

Dr Chituwo says defections from one political party to the other will always be there but that it is up to political parties losing members to make them attractive.

He adds that political party leaders should also build confidence in their members and make them believe in their leadership.

Dr Chituwo notes that membership to a political party is voluntary hence the movement from one party to another is a democratic process and a question of choice.

And Dr Chituwo says there will be nothing wrong with the UPND merging with the MMD as both parties are made up of human being and not objects.

MpondamaliThe Zambia Police on Tuesday night abducted a third freelance journalist Wilson Pondamali based in Kabwe on suspicion he was contributing articles to the online newspaper Zambian Watchdog.

Pondamali becomes the third journalist in seven days to face the dictatorial wrath of the Patriotic Front government under President Michael Sata which is determined to abuse and curtail any form of freedoms.

Zambians are currently inhibited from expressing their rights to assemble and their freedom to speech is under severe threat. Journalists Clayson Hamasaka and Thomas Zyambo were arrested last week on suspicion of contributing articles to the Zambian Watchdog. Their homes in Lusaka were raided around 02:00 hours and after 48 hours in custody, they were charged with sedition.

Online media publication are coming under severe attack from the China imported equipment used by the Xavier Chungu parallel intelligence system.

According to a statement on the Zambian Watchdog, Mpondamali was abducted on his way from Lusaka to Kabwe while his family home was raided around 05:00 hours in the morning.

Police were searching for documents to implicate Mpondamali.

“The Zambian government on Tuesday blocked the Zambian Watchdog on all the networks including MTN that had earlier rejected the suppression of the most popular news website in Zambia,” a statement reads.

“But our technical team has moved the site to another domain which is accessible in Zambia http://zwd.cums.in

“Readers within Zambian are advised to log on http://zwd.cums.in and also visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ZambianWatchdog.”

Further, the online media says the police did not even bother to inform Mpondamali’s family when he was nabbed and taken to unknown destination.

The cadre only identified as a Mr Chipili turned Chipimo away from the community radio station and warned that if the programme would go ahead, a group of PF sympathisers were to use force to remove the Narep leader.

“I have just been physically prevented from speaking on Radio Manor in Kasama by a Mr. Chipili below (claiming he is a big fish in Kasama) operating on behalf of PF,” Chipimo Jr posted on his facebook page included the picture on the left of the Mr Chipili shortly after the incident.

mulusaSolwezi Central Member of Parliament Lucky Mulusa has announced that he will embark on a walk from Chingola to Solwezi in protest over the removal of subsidies by President Michael Sata and the Patriotic Front. The distance cover about 170 kilometres (about 110 miles).

Mulusa told a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday that he will also use the walk to highlight the PF government’s failure to upgrade the Chingola-Solwezi road into a dual carriage way. He begins the walk on Saturday July 20, a day after parliament adjourns.

He said he will walk from Chingola to Solwezi in order to feel the impact that the ordinary citizens are feeling following the removal of subsidies on fuel.

Mulusa said he will use the walk to interact with the local people in areas found along the Chingola-Solwezi road.

“I will make stop overs to chat with the local people. As a representative of the people, I have to feel how they are feeling,” Mulusa said.

He said the PF has shown its true colours by subjecting poor Zambians to further misery after removing the subsidies on fuel and maize.

“They have increased fuel prices and yet they are riding in air conditioned vehicles bought using tax payers money and getting free fuel whilst the people walk because they cannot afford a bus fare.”

The Solwezi Central MP regretted that the Chingola-Solwezi road which contributes significantly to the treasury has not been lined up for upgrades.

“This is the road which gives a lot of money to the treasury and yet it is not been upgraded,” he said.

He alleged that the PF government is busy focusing on constructing and rehabilitating some roads that do not make economic sense.

Mulusa said he will begin his journey on Saturday morning after Parliament adjourns sine die this Friday.

Mealie Meal Prices Contine to Rise

millers-zambia-maize-pricesThe retail price of mealie-meal has been increased by about K5 after millers hiked the cost of the staple food by K2 on account of the removal of fuel and maize subsidies.

Prices for a 25kilogram bag have gone up by K2 and up to K6 for wholesale and retail respectively effective July 8, a survey has revealed.

Millers Association of Zambia president Allan Sakala said the increase has been necessitated by the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize.

But the Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged milling companies not to use the removal of subsidies to exploit consumers.

According to the State Owned and Patriotic Front controlled Zambia Daily Maily, Sakala who could not disclose by how much millers have increased the mealie-meal, however, indicated that, “Some milling companies have increased the price due to individual costs that firms incur during production. Their [millers’] duty is to make available the product at an affordable price.”

A survey conducted by the Daily Mail in Lusaka yesterday revealed that most retail outlets are selling the commodity between K58 and K63 for breakfast and between K40 and K42 for roller meal.

Wholesale price for Pembe, Simba and Milile brands have been increased to K58 from K56 while National Milling’s Mother’s Pride is now fetching K54 from K52.

For roller meal, Mother’s Pride is at K40 from K38 while Milile is now K42 from K40.

Some retail shops in Kamwala and Kabwata are selling a 25kg bag of Pembe and Simba breakfast mealie-meal at K62 and K63, while at Levy Business Park’s Pick N Pay, Simba K60.

Meanwhile, ZACA executive director Muyunda Ililonga urged milling firms to exercise morals as they run their businesses and refrain from the culture of reaping from consumers’ little resources.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Mr Ililonga said, “Business houses should learn how to run their business in the long term and not just looking at gaining profits and forgetting that every business needs to stabilise and create customer loyalty.

“ZACA is appealing to business houses not to take advantage of the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize to exploit consumers by increasing mealie meal prices.”

ParliamentThe Media Liaison Committee has expressed disappointment with government’s failure to table the Access to Information Bill during the current session of Parliament.

Committee Chairperson Mickey Mumba says it is unfair for government to continue shifting positions on the presentation of the bill to Parliament.

Mumba says the postponements by government are unfair and do not guarantee or assure the media fraternity that the Access to information bill will be tabled in Parliament any time soon.

He states that there is need for government to come out in the open and state its clear position with regards the Access to information bill.

Mumba adds that government’s continued changing of statements on when the bill will be tabled in Parliament leaves one to wonder what government is up to.

He says the media will not continue to live on fake promises.

Guy Scott Suffering From Political Dementia – Simusamba

Guy Scott speaks at Sikatana funeralUnited Party for National Development (UPND) deputy secretary general Kachunga Simusamba says Vice-President Guy Scott is suffering from political dementia.

This comes in the wake of Dr Scott’s statement suggesting Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda, who has come under attack for illegally office, was awarded a contract for the substantive position.

Dr Scott had delivered the statement in parliament recently as Members of Parliament joined the countrywide outcry on why she continues to perform her duties when she had not been ratified by the house of laws.

But Simusamba wondered how Dr Scott would ignore the fact that Chibesakunda can only be awarded a contract to perform her duties upon ratification by parliament.

“We can only say the vice president is suffering from what we call political dementia because he is forgetting parliamentary procedure and the law on the ratification of the Chief Justice before she can be given a contract,” he said.

Acting Chief Justice Chibesakunda has some under extreme pressure to quit her position because stakeholders are arguing she does not qualify to hold that office.

However, President Sata has defended the disgraced judge as she is serving his interests at the helm of the judiciary.

statehouseIn an ill quest to cripple the Zambian Watchdog and other online publications critical of the Patriotic Front government, the Chinese imported but finished technology has backfired and ended up blocking even the Zambian government propaganda websites, including President Michael Sata’s official State House website.

Meanwhile, mobile service providers have incurred heavy losses after blocking the Watchdog and are now demanding compensation from the PF government.

The Chinese made simple technology equipment hired at colossal sums of money saved from mealie meal and fuel subsidies has ended up blocking State House http://www.statehouse.gov.zm/en/, ZNBC http://www.znbc.co.zm, Zamnet http://www.zamnet.zm/ and other websites in government ministries including Times of Zambia http://www.times.co.zm/, leaving the targeted websites and Zambianwatchdog intact and accessible on http://4.hidemyass.com without any problems.

Internet on most service providers has become very slow especially on Zamtel due to the heavy devices placed at Lamya and Celz House to block websites.

Sources at State House have told the Watchdog that the Zambian government has so far committed Kr30 million (K30 billion) towards blocking critical content in Zambia found on this website.

They will further refund mobile phone companies huge sums of money for loss of revenue as a result of people not buying talking time for internet browsing.

A named mobile company yesterday alone presented a K1.1 billion loss that they want the government to foot.

MpondamaliA Zambian freelance journalist was charged Wednesday with possession of restricted information, in a latest crackdown on media workers critical of the government, his lawyer said.

According to According to Agence France-Presse AFP, police searched Wilson Pondamali’s home and found a document linking him to an article published by the country’s only investigative news site.

According to Pondamaili’s lawyer, Mulilo Kabesha, the document contained information suggesting that President Michael Sata was not fit to govern.

The freelance journalist is in police custody, and more charges could be brought against him.

“I can confirm that he has been charged with the offence of unlawful possession of restricted military pamphlet,” said Kabesha. The offence carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Last week, two journalists Clayson Hamasaka and Thomas Zyambo were charged with sedition after they were found with documents linked to articles published on Zambian Watchdog.

The hunt continued despite the publication’s policy of withholding the names of its journalists to protect their identities. Its webpage has been blocked by authorities since Tuesday. This is the second time the webpage is being blocked in under one month.

The government of the southern African country has been accused of being intolerant of criticism.

ProflightA Livingstone-bount Proflight Zambia plane Boeing 737-200 carrying 75 passengers yesterday aborted its flight after developing a mechanical fault a few minutes after take-off at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

The aircraft, which took off at 12:30, was forced to land shortly.

Proflight Zambia spokesperson Gillian Langmead confirmed the incident in response to a press query, saying the alternative aircraft arranged to ferry the passengers to Livingstone would continue to operate until the plane is cleared by engineers.

Langmead said management has instituted investigations into the cause of the mechanical fault on the plane.

“The aircraft which took the passengers to Livingstone will be used until our current 737 is signed out by engineering to resume operations. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority,” Langmead said.

She said Proflight Zambia takes pride in its excellent safety record and at no point was there any danger to the passengers or crew.

Langmead said a 737-200 aircraft had been deployed from Johannesburg and was expected to arrive in Lusaka at 18:00 yesterday.

When it landed, the plane was rolled from the runway to the former Zambezi Airways hangar for inspections.

A check at the airport found the aircraft at the hangar, surrounded by engineers.

Bloggers Protest Watchdog, Zambia Reports Blocking

A sizeable group of people calling themselves Zambian bloggers yesterday converged at the Freedom Statute in Lusaka to protest the blocking of two critical websites – Zambian Watchdog and Zambia Reports – from domestic access in the country.

Some sources report that the Patriotic Front government has alleged hired Chinese and Russian technical teams to block these websites, which have published news stories exposing corruption and other legal violations by certain officials of President Michael Sata’s administration.

Since early June, the PF has attempted to close the Zambian Watchdog and on Thursday extended its attack to Zambia Reports, a move that has drawn condemnation from international organisations such as Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.

The international media has also taken note of the rising censorship in Zambia. An article published in the U.K. newspaper The Guardian has highlighted the crackdown against journalists, while other members of the diplomatic community have been pressed with letters of concern.

Zambian Watchdog continues to be viewable in Zambia via its mirror site, while Zambia Reports, for the time being, can be accessed through Facebook.

Both organisations have offered various forms of support. In Lusaka, the bloggers who were dressed in black to also commemorate Black Friday demanded that President Michael Sata respects the right to free speech.

The bloggers also called on the Zambian government to stop the harassment of journalists that were arrested. The journalists linked to the Watchdog, Clayson Hamasaka, Thomas Zymabo and Wilson Mpondamali are being persecuted.

Mpondamali is still behind bars four days after his arrest while Hamasaka and Zyambo are charged with sedition.

The bloggers dispersed after an hour of their procession following word that PF cadres organised by the militia group had organised themselves and were heading to the area to create confusion like what was experienced at BIGOCA.

LAZ Ask Mulusa to Compile Dossier on Mutembo Nchito

Muetmbo Nchito during parliamentary committee sittingThe Law Association of Zambia has advised Solwezi Central Member of Parliament Lucky Mulusa to make submissions on the possible action against director of public prosecutions, DPP, Mutembo Nchito.

LAZ had summoned Mutembo to appear before its disciplinary committee following a complaint of professional misconduct.

Mulusa lodged a complaint alleging that Mutembo conducted himself unprofessionally when he appeared before a parliamentary committee and pledged on oath not to prosecute cases in which he had vested interest.

To the surprise of parliament, Mutembo has proceeded to prosecute the case of former president Rupiah Banda and further awarded suspicious nolle prosequis to businessman Rajan Mathani who he owes billions of kwacha.

These two cases were highlighted during the confirmation stage and Mutembo pledged to declare interest. However, he proceeded to actively participate in the decisions of the two cases.

Mulusa believes Mutembo was in parliamentary breach as he neglected to hold the house regulations. Mutembo is also caught up in a series of financial impropriate cases. He also forged a a signature on a judgement by judge Gregory Phiri.

Mutembo arrogantly refused to appear at the LAZ hearing saying the DDP can’t be subjected to a lower office.

Since Mutembo refused to appear, the committee asked Mulusa to make submissions indicating action that should be meted against the truant DPP. Mutembo and his partner Fred M’membe, the PF chief propagandist, were found guilty of defaulting the Development Bank of Zambia out of over K14 billion loan.

Zambia, Zimbabwe Battle for Cosafa Prize

Football - 2013 Cosafa Cup - Semi Finals - South Africa v Zambia - Levy Mwanawasa Stadium - ZambiaZambia’s quest to join Zimbabwe on the most decorated Cosafa Cup winners list today goes on the line as Herve Renard’s lads face Klaus-Deiter Pagels’ Warriors at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

According to bolazambia, the match kicks off at 15:00 hours with the third and fourth playoff pitting South Africa and Lesotho taking place earlier at 13:00 hours at the same venue.

Zimbabwe have won the trophy a record four times, the highest any team has won it and the Chipolopolo could join them with victory on Saturday.

The two sides clashed in the last edition of the competition in the finals with Zimbabwe who hosted the match winning via a 3-1 result.

Renard has narrowed the contest to a grudge match saying it is time for his side to avenge the 2009 loss to Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe had also won the 2005 edition at Zambia’s expense making it two better over the Chipolopolo.

The Warriors have fought their way to the final after sweeping aside Malawi in the quarterfinals and beat Lesotho 2-1 in the semi finals to earn the right to defend their crown.

Two goal hero in the semi final Tendai Ndoro and Erick Chipeta are the men Pagels is counting on to go past the Bronson Chama and Christopher Munthali marshaled backline.

Monomotapa midfielder Ronald Chitiyo, who despite his slim build, has been a handful for any side the Warriors have faced and the Zambians should be wary of his neat passes in the middle of the pack.

But with the Zambians geared for only one result at their fortress Levy Mwanawasa where they are yet to lose a match the stakes will be high.

The yet to bond striker partnership of Bonwell Mwape and Festus Mbewe will have to raise the bar higher to do better than their unimpressive shift in front of goal against South Africa.

With Bruce Musakanya unlikely to shake off injury, Renard could opt to give youngster Julius Situmbeko a role on the left wing to add creativity alongside the flamboyant Mukuka Mulenga.

The backline that has only conceded one goal in open play against Mozambique will need to raise the bar.

Zimbabwe will be in familiar territory having been the team that opened the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in an international friendly that the hosts won 2-1.

Hosts Zambia Win 4th Cosafa Title

Cosafa-Zam-champsZambia finally put up a convincing performance to end an eight year Cosafa drought at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with a 2-0 win over defending champions Zimbabwe.

Ironically it was the Warriors that beat Zambia in Harare by a 3-1 result in 2009, the last time the tournament was held.

Goals from Nchanga Rangers forward Alex Ngon’ga and Chongo Kabaso of Konkola Mine Police ensured Zambia joined Zimbabwe on the two countries to have won the regional tournament four times.

Zimbabwe were hoping to add a fifth title but Ngon’ga who made his first start since the tournament powered home a free kick that beat goalie Maxwell Nyamupanedengu and set the Chipolopolo on their way to victory.

Masimba Mambare had brought down Kapumbu and Ng’onga stepped up to take the set piece that he drove home with a lurking Festus Mbewe missing the ball but it nevertheless nestled itself in the net.

In the 14th minute a Bonwell Mwape speculative header grazed the post as it went outside.

A minute later, a rampaging Mbewe sent his effort wide as Zambia continued to press for another goal.

Jimmy Chisenga who was having a torrid time and being overrun by Charles Sibanda found himself on the back foot and had lost part of the steam that won him man of the match on the opening day.

Zimbabwe who were trying to fight their way back in the game had an opportunity in the 15th minute but Hardlife Zvirekwi ballooned his effort.

Mwape who looked forlorn each time he was in front of goal went limp in the 19th minute with the goal at his mercy.

And the Warriors had a chance to level matters but Tendai Ndoro who was tearing the Bronson Chama and Christopher Munthali central defence pair but the clinical striker had his effort wide.

Ndoro was back to haunt Munyau in the 28th minute with a long shot that the Zambian glovesman had to tip over to keep a clean sheet.

Zambia were back in familiar territory after Ng’onga had his set piece find Mbewe who connected weakly in the 37th minute.

Zimbabwe skipper Mumbare whipped in a cross that Ndoro angled in but an alert Munyau saved the day for Zambia in the 44th minute.

At the start of the second half Zimbabwe withdrew Nicholas Guyo for Chitiyo and Ali Sadiki in for Sibanda.

Renard brought in Misheck Chaile for Sydney Kalume in the 74th minute and the Konkola Blades player did not disappoint with beautiful effort in the 77th minute.

Looking to preserve the honour of Levy Mwanwasa Stadium, Renard got physical with Chisenga who he slapped after a blunder by the Red Arrows defender almost gifted Zimbabwe a goal.

In the 83rd minute Moses Phiri was introduced for Ngo’nga and the substitution almost paid off instantly as Moses beat his marker and unleashed a thunderbolt that just grazed the upright.

Substitute Chongo Kabaso made a hero out of himself in the dying minutes when he scored from a free kick to send the packed Levy Mwanawasa Stadium into raptures.

Meanwhile, South Africa came from a goal down to beat Lesotho 2-1 in the third and forth play off of the 2013 Cosafa Cup Senior Challenge played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Lesotho opened the score from the spot on 20 minutes after South Africa’s Tsepo Gumede brought down Tale Thapelo and Mailie Tlalie stepped up to to take the penalty that beat Wayne Sandilands to put the Likuena in pole position.

But Bafana Bafana hit back in the 43rd minute when Masango Mandla sent in a Lerato Chabangu set piece to draw Gordon Igesund’s lads level.

Persecuted journalist Thamos Zyambo this afternoon joined MMD Solwezi Central MP Lucky Mulusa and Zambezi East legislator Sarah Sayifwanda on his 170Km solidarity walk from Chingola to Solwezi.

Zyambo, slapped with sedition charges and is due to appear in court next work for alleged link to the Zambian Watchdog, is expected to be part of the five day expedition that will highlight gross mismanagement of the economy by the Patriotic Front government through the removal of subsidies, the poor state of the Chingola-Solwezi road and the arbitrary arrest of journalists.

Clayson Hamasaka and Wilson Mpondamali are also part of the journalists being persecuted with State House press aide George Chellah and information permanent secretary Amos Malupenga allegedly profiling more than 10 others in a bid to clamp down on media operations and free speech.

The protestors will also use the walk to listen and interact with the local people on the impact that the removal of subsidies has had on their lives.

“We want to walk in order to feel the way our people feel everyday. When we say the removal of subsidies is hurting people, we want to be speaking from a point of strong knowledge,” Mr Mulusa said.

“The poor state of that road has killed a lot of people. We will be stopping over at every dark spot to pay homage to the people that have died. That way we hope to bring to the attention of the PF government the importance of upgrading this economically important road.”

He said the Chingola-Solwezi road contributes significantly to the treasury and wondered why it has not been listed on the key roads to be worked on in the Link 8,000 road project.
