Zambia finally put up a convincing performance to end an eight year Cosafa drought at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with a 2-0 win over defending champions Zimbabwe.
Ironically it was the Warriors that beat Zambia in Harare by a 3-1 result in 2009, the last time the tournament was held.
Goals from Nchanga Rangers forward Alex Ngon’ga and Chongo Kabaso of Konkola Mine Police ensured Zambia joined Zimbabwe on the two countries to have won the regional tournament four times.
Zimbabwe were hoping to add a fifth title but Ngon’ga who made his first start since the tournament powered home a free kick that beat goalie Maxwell Nyamupanedengu and set the Chipolopolo on their way to victory.
Masimba Mambare had brought down Kapumbu and Ng’onga stepped up to take the set piece that he drove home with a lurking Festus Mbewe missing the ball but it nevertheless nestled itself in the net.
In the 14th minute a Bonwell Mwape speculative header grazed the post as it went outside.
A minute later, a rampaging Mbewe sent his effort wide as Zambia continued to press for another goal.
Jimmy Chisenga who was having a torrid time and being overrun by Charles Sibanda found himself on the back foot and had lost part of the steam that won him man of the match on the opening day.
Zimbabwe who were trying to fight their way back in the game had an opportunity in the 15th minute but Hardlife Zvirekwi ballooned his effort.
Mwape who looked forlorn each time he was in front of goal went limp in the 19th minute with the goal at his mercy.
And the Warriors had a chance to level matters but Tendai Ndoro who was tearing the Bronson Chama and Christopher Munthali central defence pair but the clinical striker had his effort wide.
Ndoro was back to haunt Munyau in the 28th minute with a long shot that the Zambian glovesman had to tip over to keep a clean sheet.
Zambia were back in familiar territory after Ng’onga had his set piece find Mbewe who connected weakly in the 37th minute.
Zimbabwe skipper Mumbare whipped in a cross that Ndoro angled in but an alert Munyau saved the day for Zambia in the 44th minute.
At the start of the second half Zimbabwe withdrew Nicholas Guyo for Chitiyo and Ali Sadiki in for Sibanda.
Renard brought in Misheck Chaile for Sydney Kalume in the 74th minute and the Konkola Blades player did not disappoint with beautiful effort in the 77th minute.
Looking to preserve the honour of Levy Mwanwasa Stadium, Renard got physical with Chisenga who he slapped after a blunder by the Red Arrows defender almost gifted Zimbabwe a goal.
In the 83rd minute Moses Phiri was introduced for Ngo’nga and the substitution almost paid off instantly as Moses beat his marker and unleashed a thunderbolt that just grazed the upright.
Substitute Chongo Kabaso made a hero out of himself in the dying minutes when he scored from a free kick to send the packed Levy Mwanawasa Stadium into raptures.
Meanwhile, South Africa came from a goal down to beat Lesotho 2-1 in the third and forth play off of the 2013 Cosafa Cup Senior Challenge played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Lesotho opened the score from the spot on 20 minutes after South Africa’s Tsepo Gumede brought down Tale Thapelo and Mailie Tlalie stepped up to to take the penalty that beat Wayne Sandilands to put the Likuena in pole position.
But Bafana Bafana hit back in the 43rd minute when Masango Mandla sent in a Lerato Chabangu set piece to draw Gordon Igesund’s lads level.
