The African Union (AU) is not giving up on finding a lasting solution to the Somalia war situation.
Special representative for Chairperson of African Union Commission (SRCC) Ambassador Francesco Madeira has pledged the AU’s continued moral and financial support towards peace and stability of Somalia.
Madeira said fighting rebel groups needed concerted efforts if the battle was to be won.
He said this in Jabbaland State in Somalia during the hand over of the newly constructed Dalhixis police station to the Somali government funded by the Danish government and implemented by the African Union Peace Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
He said the handing over of Dalhixis Police Station to government was a landmark moment in the partnership between the AU and Somalia as well as AMISOM and Jubbaland State in an effort to transform the country into a peaceful and developed area.
The police in Jabbaland state were operating under a tree and some makeshift structures due to lack of proper infrastructure.
“We will continue as we did today to work with our partners to look for more resources to build more police stations and train police officers, to help the youths not to fall into rebel groups,” Mr Madeira said.
He said AMISOM was not doing all that to accumulate glory but for the sake of the people of Somalia as envisioned in the AU vision of Africa that aimed at having a free, stable and developed continent.
He added, “Somalia was a hero in the time when Africa needed Somalia, so it is just normal, natural that today Somalia needs the African support that we came here to show the African solidarity.”
“We are your partners and will remain partners. We are together and will remain together until Jubbaland and Somalia are free of violence, instability and destruction,” Madeira said.
And acting AMISOM police commissioner Christine Alalo urged the community in Jabbaland to report any criminal cases to the police to ensure culprits were brought to book.
Alalo who thanked the Danish government for having funded the project disclosed that AMISOM engaged it in 2016 after realising that the police in Jabbaland were operating under the tree.
Meanwhile, Jabbaland State vice president Mohammed Sayid Adan thanked the AU and AMISOM for the gesture.
Adan said the newly constructed police station would go a long way in curbing violence and other criminal activities.
He assured Madeira that the facility would be put to good use.
