UPND Deputy National Youth and Sport chairperson Michael Chuzu has landed himself in trouble for allegedly proclaiming that his party does not recognize President Edgar Lungu as the legitimate leader of Zambia.
Chuzu appeared in the Chipata Magistrate Court in a matter he is charged with seditious practices for allegedly stating that his party does not recognize Edgar Lungu as duly elected because he is unwell.
Chuzu was put on his defence after he was found with a case to answer.
The prosecution called four witnesses to prove its case.
Chuzu was arrested in 2016 when he appeared on Chipata TV and stated that his party does not recognize President Lungu.
He was jointly charged with Chipata TV news editor Iris Mwale who was
later released through a nolle prosequi before she was turned into a state witness.
The duo were charged with seditious practices contrary to section
57(1)(b) of the penal code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence where that on September 26, 2016 in Chipata the duo jointly and whilst acting together with intent to raise discontent among people of Zambia, seditiously uttered and published a seditious publication concerning the government of the republic of Zambia containing the following words, The position of the party UPND include me, the national management met on Saturday and our position is that we do not recognize Edgar as a duly elected, so for us at the moment, we do not have a president,”
The matter which is before magistrates Philip Mpundu comes up for mention on 7 August and 10 September for defence.
