With the political atmosphere in the Chipata Central by-election high ahead of Thursday’s parliamentary by-election the police have arrested two Movement for Multi Party Democracy who they have charged with defamation of the president.
The duo who is Kanjala Ward councillor Jealous Phiri and Sinoya Mwale appeared in the Chipata Magistrate Court and have since pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The duo are accused of having insinuated that President Sata is a satanist during political campaigns in the Chipata Central by-election.
Meanwhile, some candidates in the Chipata Central by-election shunned a Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation discussion programme in protest of the biased coverage by the national broadcaster.
Only PF candidate Lameck Mangani and the National Restoration Party’s Kazembe Daka turned up.
The electorates in Chipata Central will be going to the polls to elect their MP following the nullification of the election of Reuben Mutolo Phiri as lawmaker.
