Women politicians like Dora Siliya, Inonge Wina, Catherine Namugala, Edith Nawakwi, Prof Nkandu Luo, Jean Kapata, Mumbi Phiri and Margrate Mwanakatwe can dream of a realistic chance of becoming a first female presidential running mate.
This is after President Edgar Lungu revealed that he is going to appoint a woman as his running mate in the 11th August, Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.
“Those of you positioning yourselves as running mate must be women. If not then there is no chance for you because even in the Constitution there is a provision. This is an exposé and there is no problem on my part as I am already doing this and it will be a
tradition,” the President said.
President Lungu has urged women to rise up now and make use of him as he stands ready to support them in the country.
“Women are Equal Partners. I took time to encourage women at a breakfast fundraising meeting. Let us achieve a minimum of 40% women in Parliament, in Cabinet and event at State House!
“This work begins now and we should give the opportunity, as political parties, to our women candidate in the upcoming tripartite elections.
“This is not the work of tokenism but the work to make our women as equal partners in development. Besides we have women that are capable and able to participate in the conduct of national affairs,” President Lungu later posted on his official Facebook page.
