PRESIDENT Lungu is ready to assent to the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Bill as soon as he receives it because its contents are what Zambians want.
He has also warned the opposition political parties, particularly the United Party for National Development (UPND), against plotting anarchy ahead of next year’s tripartite elections.
He said this yesterday in Lusaka before departure for Muchinga and Northern provinces, and on arrival in Kasama.
President Lungu said it is unfortunate that some people who were previously demanding the constitution, have now changed their positions and are saying that he should hold on to it.
Mr Lungu said Zambians have been given a constitution that they wanted and he wondered why some critics are against popular demand.
“I have to do what the people want and it is sad that some people are always negative, but I want to say that the people of Zambia are interested in development and I have stated that I will give them development.
“The people of Zambia also wanted the constitution and we have given them, and it is up to them to decide who means well for the country,” Mr Lungu said.
He challenged the opposition on why some of the opposition were now “shifting goal posts” after the constitution was amended according to the will of the people.
“This constitution was the demand by the majority of Zambians, including the UPND, now that we have given the constitution they are shifting goal posts. They wanted 50 plus 1 we gave them; running mate we have given them; dual citizenship we have given,” he said.
President Lungu says he will not allow a breakdown of law and order in the country.
He said he had received reports that some politicians in Muchinga are arming cadres with machetes ahead of the elections.
“But I want to say that I will not allow a breakdown of law and order in the country ahead of next year’s elections,” President Lungu said.
Mr Lungu also said some people had been paid in Kasama to boo him as he arrives to commission the Pensulo-Kasama grid transmission line.
On arrival in Kasama, Mr Lungu said he has received information that the UPND is planning to instigate anarchy and violence as the nation prepares for the 2016 tripartite elections.
“I am requesting the UPND to hold peace. I have information that they want to foment or cause confusion,” Mr Lungu said.
He said that peace is important and that the UPND should just face the PF at the polls where the opposition party would be trounced.
Mr Lungu warned that law enforcement agencies stand ready to curb confusion and appealed to the opposition to hold their peace.
President Lungu said the PF is ready for next year’s elections under a new republican constitution and has urged PF members in Northern Province to resist violence.
