The Zambia Revenue Authority yesterday raided the Post Newspaper to conduct a search, alleging that the authority was in possession of information to the effect that the newspaper was engaging in tax malpractices.
According to the Post, eight officers claiming to be from ZRA, accompanied by two armed state Police officers, arrived at the Post’s Bwinjifumu offices and its courier headquarters in the light industrial area around 10:00 hours with search warrants authorising to search for ICT equipment, desktop computers, laptops and servers, business records, purchase and sales day books, cash books and any other account books, among other things.
The search lasted up to 18:45 hours with the officers confiscating some equipment among them laptops.
The authority recently raided the Post and has previously attempted to recover debts owed to it in what it alleges to be unmet tax obligations by the newspaper.
A suit is currently in court with counter suits to the same effect by the authority and the newspaper both seeking redress and judicial review.
The Post has come under attack with various probes, arrest of the proprietor, journalists and even violent attacks by ruling party cadres since it took to the reportage of critical views and news earlier this year, having previously been pro PF before the unexpected demise of President Micheal Sata.
At one of his rallies, President Edgar Lungu issued warnings to the Post (and its proprietor Fred M’membe) for what he termed insistent criticism by the paper.
