KCMMore than 200 miners were last night trapped underground for nearly six hours at Mopani Copper Mines Plc’s Mindolo Shaft on the Copperbelt following a power outage.

According to sources familiar with the situation, a sudden power outage led to the miners being trapped, but when an effort was made to restore power to the affected area there was a fire at the Substation.

It took a combined team of rescuers known as the Proto team from Mopani, CEC and Zesco worked tirelessly. The last miner out of the underground area was brought out around 02:00 hours this morning.

Zesco, CEC and Mopani are expected to issue a comprehensive statement on the situation later today. The combined team is expected to give more details on the power outage and the subsequent fire at the substation.

However, investigations are still in the early stages and it may be too soon to expect a detailed statement especially that the combined team is expected to adequately brief government on the situation.
