Calm has returned to the University of Zambia Great East road campus after students staged a riot over the delay in releasing results by lecturers following a long standing dispute over unpaid allowances.
The lecturers have refused to release the results despite government staking some partial payment on a four month stretch that they have dismissed as unserious.
Both government and the lecturers are playing hard ball with Education Minister Michael Kaingu saying the lecturers should not think that “money grows on trees”.
Students who are getting impatient with the lack of a solution long after results were due to be released showed their displeasure by blocking the Great East road until police moved to quieten the situation.
A fragile peace seems to hold currently, but there could still be an incident late as suggested by some students.
Results were due to be released on August 17 with the opening of the institution for the 2015/16 academic year set for October 4.
This morning riots broke out at the country’s highest learning institution, the University of Zambia, with the Great East Road shut to public use. The students stormed the roadside to pounce on innocent members of the public.
A heavy presence of police was deployed at the scene to quell the protests. Motorists using Great East from areas such as Munali, Kaunda Square, Chainama, PHI, Chelstone, Avodale, Airport and Meanwood were advised to use alternative routes.
The road between Munali roundabaout and Arcades roundabout was closed for most parts of the morning.
