Liato Freed on Compassionate Grounds

LiatoFormer Labour Minister Austin Liato has been saved a longer stay in prison after he was discharged on compassionate grounds.

The Supreme Court upheld his two year jail sentence in June over his infamous K2 billion cash that was buried at his Mwembeshi farm was believed to have been proceeds of crime.

Liato has been confined to the University Teaching Hospital since August 17 and attracted a pardon under the Prisons Act.

He joins other high profile personalities among them former sports deputy minister Steven Masumba and former community development deputy minister Moses Muteteka.

Liato is among 22 prisoners that have been freed for various considerations.
