unzaTension is brewing at the University of Zambia Great East road campus following a delay in the payment of meal allowances by government.

The students have threatened to riot if their allowances are not paid by Friday after going two weeks from the scheduled period of payment.

Students gathered at the traditional revolutionary Monk Square to plot the way forward and have since resolved to boycott class if their demands are not met.

However, with the Patriotic Front government high on campaigns the students have been told that they can only receive their allowances after the January, 20 elections.

The students are seeking to force government to pay their allowances before elections.

Last term students rioted on three occasions over meal allowances and they have indicated that they will go the same route if nothing happens to ensure they are paid on time.
